Resilience of sloshing cold fronts against subsequent minor mergers

چکیده
Minor mergers are common in galaxy clusters. They have the potential to create sloshing cold fronts (SCFs) intracluster medium (ICM) of cluster. However, resilience SCFs subsequent minor is unknown. Here we investigate extent which established by an off-axis merger disrupted a merger. We perform suite 13 hydrodynamic + N-body simulations idealised triple cluster vary approach direction and impact parameter tertiary Except for ~1 Gyr after first core passage cluster, clear present all configurations. Subsequent head-on reduce number significantly, while only moderately SCFs. In particular, outer (>~500 kpc) resilient. The results this work indicate that easily formed course long-lived even if further takes place. thus should be ubiquitous, but deriving history given based on its observed might more complex than previously thought.

On the formation of cold fronts in massive mergers
Using adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations, we follow the evolution of two symmetric cold fronts developing in the remnant of a violent z = 0.3 massive cluster merger. The structure and location of the simulated cold fronts are very similar to those recently found in X-ray cluster observations, supporting the merger hypothesis for the origin of at least some of the cold fronts. The cold fronts ...

We present a simplified and fast method for simulating minor mergers between galaxy clusters. Instead of following the evolution of the dark matter halos directly by the N-body method, we employ a rigid potential approximation for both clusters. The simulations are run in the rest frame of the more massive cluster and account for the resulting inertial accelerations in an optimised way. We test...

We simulate the accretion of high-density dwarf galaxies by low-density giant galaxies, using models that contain both power-law central density cusps and central point masses representing supermassive black holes. The final density profiles of the merger remnants are always similar to the initial density profile of the giant galaxy, for two reasons. 1. The density of the dwarf galaxy is reduce...
متن کاملKelvin-helmholtz Instabilities at the Sloshing Cold Fronts in the Virgo Cluster as a Measure for the Effective Icm Viscosity
Sloshing cold fronts (CFs) arise from minor merger triggered gas sloshing. Their detailed structure depends on the properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM): hydrodynamical simulations predict the CFs to be distorted by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs), but aligned magnetic fields, viscosity, or thermal conduction can suppress the KHIs. Thus, observing the detailed structure of sloshing...
متن کاملCold Fronts in Cdm Clusters
Recently, high-resolution Chandra observations revealed the existence of very sharp features in the Xray surface brightness and temperature maps of several clusters (Vikhlinin et al., 2001). These features, called “cold fronts”, are characterized by an increase in surface brightness by a factor ∼> 2 over 10-50 kpc, accompanied by a drop in temperature of a similar magnitude. The existence of su...
